Training
Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and educated at The King’s School there. Read for a degree at the University of York, then the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, completing Guildhall’s opera programme in 2018 under Dominic Wheeler and Martin Lloyd-Evans. Vocal tuition from John Evans.
Two young-artist programmes followed: a Glyndebourne Jerwood Young Artist in 2018, and the National Opera Studio in London, completed in June 2019.
Düsseldorf
August 2020 — joined the Opera Studio of Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the house serving Düsseldorf and Duisburg. Remained until July 2022, taking main-stage roles and concerts, and working in masterclasses with Marius Vlad, Helmut Deutsch, Linda Watson and Barbara Frittoli.
August 2022 — joined the house’s Soloist Ensemble. The roles listed for that season give the range expected of an ensemble baritone: Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Ping in Turandot, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Albert in Märchen im Grand-Hotel.
Concert platform
Soloist at the Royal Albert Hall on multiple occasions — Orff’s Carmina Burana and Handel’s Messiah — for conductors including Bob Chilcott, Ben Parry and Brian Kay.
With The Monteverdi Choir under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, appearances across Europe including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Barbican Centre, and the Royal Chapel at the Palace of Versailles.
The clarinet
Unusually for a singer, this is not a footnote. A semi-professional clarinettist who continued to play with orchestras and chamber groups, and in musical theatre pit bands on various woodwinds. His orchestral arrangements have been performed by the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker. In Deutsche Oper am Rhein’s staged production of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio he appeared both as a vocal soloist and as an on-stage instrumentalist, playing several clarinet obbligati — one of them in an arrangement of his own.
Lockdown
During the pandemic he produced a run of multi-tracked instrumental and vocal videos, recorded at home on a single Zoom H4n microphone, a phone camera and free software, published to his YouTube channel and collected on the site under Corona-Projects.
